Kids' Gifts - Popular Toys For Kids

Children of all ages love to play with toys, and for that reason a toy is almost always an excellent gift choice. There are always toys that are in style or fashion, and some that are very trendy, and some that are classic gifts. When considering what gift to get a child, it is important to consider the age of the child, what they already have, what they like to play with, and what your budget may be.

There are several different toys that are popular with kids, and there are toys that are more popular with boys than girls, and vice versa. In choosing toys for kids remember that children love to use their imagination, so toys that encourage creativity and play are exceptional choices.

For young boys cars and racetracks are always popular. Fisher Price has produced a "Shake and Go Speedway Racetrack" which allows the child to shake the car to power up the motor, and then place it on the track to race. An automatic voice gives a play by play of the race, and kids and adults alike can cheer along. Lego has always been a favorite, and the wide variety of theme packs that can interchange with each other makes Lego a versatile gift. A new Wild Hunters Lego set complete with elephants, lions and crocodiles can really stir the imagination. Another building set that is very popular in Magneatos, which uses the concept of magnets to hold the building blocks together. These pieces are larger than Lego blocks and are perfect for younger children.

For girls there are several new toys that are very popular. The Rescue Pets are delightful looking puppies and kittens waiting to be adopted by your little girl. They have their own adoption certificate and information on caring for your puppy or kitten. EZ 2 Quikrochet is not your old-fashioned spool knitting craft package. This uniquely designed easy to hold knitting tool is perfect for making fashion jewelry, hair accessories, scarves or other projects. The Hollywood Barbie set is very popular, with Barbie being a Hollywood movie director. The doll comes with all the accessories, and can of course be interchanged with any other Barbie set. There is also the traditional favorite of the Easy Bake Oven for younger children. Kids love to pretend to cook, and this is a terrific way to let them pretend, without having to worry about safety.

Boys and girls enjoy a lot of toys and games together, and it is important to avoid indicating that some games or toys are just for boys or just for girls. Encouraging children to spend time playing together with toys, using their imaginations and just having fun is what being young is all about. One of the cool new toys that is loved by both boys and girls is the Etch a Sketch Wired. This allows the Etch A Sketch board to be wired to the TV set, so the children will actually see on TV what they are drawing on their Etch-A-Sketch screen. Another popular board game is the Cranium Family Fun or the Cranium original. The Family Fun version is designed for younger children up to age 7, and the original game is for older children.

Different Toys For Kids Of Different Ages Help In Proper Development

There are lots of toys available in the market and you will get suitable toys for any age group you want. The toys are perfectly divided into categories for kids of different ages keeping in mind the mental status and ability of the child. If you have a toddler you will need to purchase something that will be of interest for your small child and also keep him busy. He must enjoy the game or play with the toy and have fun. At the same time, if you buy some sensible toys, you can teach him about the different colors, shapes and sizes, and make his concept clear about opposites like big and small, fat and thin etc. If you will tell at the store the age of your child, the salesperson will give you the information of what type of toys will be the best for your child.

For a child who is little bigger than a toddler say of age 1 or 2 years, then you need to buy different toys that will keep him engaged. Along with this it would be good to buy some educational toys so that the child learns lots of things while he is playing. You can teach him counting, ask him to search for the alphabets or numbers or teach him the nursery rhymes with the CD and lots more. But first of all you need to understand his behavior and interests so that you offer him the toy of his choice and the purpose of a support for him is also fulfilled. The child can learn to balance and get familiar with the motion if you buy him a rocking horse. You have to look after the overall development of your child without interfering in his fun and enjoyment.

When the child is a toddler, he grows very fast and the development of his mind is also very fast and needs to be molded into perfect direction. If the mind of a child is directed properly in the perfect age he will choose the right path always. Parenting is a tough and responsible job and parents have to be very careful in choosing the toys for their children of any age. Every age has its own demand of attention and care. The child also needs to be offered quality time of their parents and the perfect selection of toys for their mental and physical development. There are many types of blocks available in the market for different age groups of children. They are created keeping in mind the ability of a child of that particular age and you can assure yourself by comparing the game's involvement for your child.

Kids of different age groups have the capacity of doing things or solving puzzles quite differently. So there are levels made for any toy and if you think that your child can do better than those of his age group you can select a game of higher level than the average one.

Buying Tips for Bath Toys

We've seen how Ernie loves his rubber duckie. And just like him, you want your kid to have a bath toy that he will enjoy taking his bath with. You go to the toy store in search of the perfect bath toy for your kid but found yourself in the middle of too many choices which leaves you puzzled and wondering which ones to get for your kid.

Bath Toys just like any normal toy requires careful thought and consideration from the parents before purchase. Follow these tips and you won't have a hard time making your selection.

Tip No. 1: Durability. Look for bath toys that that are made of durable materials that will not easily wear out even though frequently thrown around or squeezed so hard.

Tip No. 2: Safety. Opt for bath toys that are made of cloth, rubber, or soft materials that will not hurt your kid in case he accidentally hits himself with it. Check to make sure that a toy does not have sharp or pointy edges, small parts that can easily fit your kid's mouth or parts that can come off loose like little sewn buttons. Also make sure that it does not have any part that can rust since bath toys are always submerged in the water.

Tip No. 3: Educational Value. Choose toys that are not only fun to play with but also stimulate your kid's mind. Give him a bath puppet to encourage imaginative pretend plays and positive interaction or give him a multi-colored wash glove to improve his visual perception and color discrimination. Always remember that every single minute of your child's day holds a possibility for learning and mind enriching activities, this includes bath time.

Tip No. 4: Holds your kid's interest. Of course, a bath toy that will hold your kid's attention only for a few seconds is obviously not a good buy. Select toys that are fun for your kid to play with and that have features or activities that will captivate your kid's attention for the whole duration of the bath and even for the days to come. It is also smart to alternate different sets of bath toys everyday so that your kid is not easily bored with them.

Tip No. 5: Budget. Don't go for toys that will hurt your pockets or those extremely cheap ones that seem too good to be true but are in reality just poorly constructed. Go for toys that come in reasonable and affordable prices but are guaranteed to be made of the highest standards of safety and quality to ensure that you only get the best for your child.

Even though the wide selection of bath toys may make it hard for you to make your choice, with these simple tips, the right kinds of bath toys are not hard to find.

Cool Off with an Awesome Outdoor Water Toy

Outdoor water toys hold a special place in my heart. I have many fond memories of growing up under the hot California summer sun with great water toys. My arsenal included everything from massive water grenades to Super Soakers to Slip 'n' Slides. All of my school friends used to venture over to my home each and every weekend to play with all of my goodies and cool off during the hottest days during the summer. While our water bill was probably astronomical, none of us cared, as we were all having far too much fun outside. Even though we could have trapped ourselves inside and had hours of fun playing videogames on out Nintendo, we really enjoyed heading outdoors simply so that we could play in the water. After all, what kid does not enjoy getting wet on a hot summer day? If you are tired of having your kids sit around the house all summer long when you feel that they should be outside enjoying themselves, you definitely need a wide variety of outdoor water toys to help motivate them to head outside.

A small kiddy pool is the first outdoor water toy that you should consider purchasing for your kids. Short of running through the sprinklers, this is the single best way to cool off on a hot day if you do not already own an inground or above ground pool. These kid pools come in a multitude of shapes and sizes and are great for all sorts of youngsters. All you have to do is inflate it, position it in your backyard and then fill it full of water to provide your kids with hours of fun.

As far as squirt guns go, you should avoid all of those realistic looking pieces that look like handguns and stick with something that has been tried and tested over the past decade or so. The Super Soaker brand of squirt gun is what you should be looking for. With their massive range of prices, you can find these guns in just about any toy store. From the weaker guns that only hold a little bit of water to much more powerful items that almost look like high tech water based flamethrowers, there are tons of these toys that are perfect for kids of all ages. There is nothing like a great water fight in your backyard during a hot summer day, and no water fight would be complete without a Super Soaker squirt gun in each kid's hands.

Glow in the Dark Mars Mud

Glow in the Dark Mars Mud

Product Details

On our last flight back from Mars, we noticed a weird substance sticking to the USS Timmy-prise (the name of our ship, naturally). It was sticky and it bounced and it stretched and it definitely behaved in an alien manner. When night fell, we learned this unusual substance glowed in the dark, to boot. We did the only thing we could think of - we gathered it up, put it in retail packaging, and now we're offering it to you. Behold: Mars Mud.

Mars Mud is an unusual little inorganic polymer that sometimes behaves like a solid and sometimes behaves like a really thick liquid. It's opalescent and can be played with in innumerable ways. There are two secrets about Mars Mud - and we want to share them with you. First, playing with Mars Mud leaves your hands feeling strangely soft. And second (and this is the most fun part), squishing Mars Mud back into its container makes all sorts of gross noises. Gross bodily-functiony noises. You know what we mean. Space farts.

  • Ages 5 and up
  • Stretches, tears, bounces, and glows in the dark, in all its slimy glory.
  • Random packed, marbled, glow in the dark colors

Horse Toys - Equine Entertainment For Less!

Horse toys can keep your horse busy and happy when she's in her stall. Left alone, horses can get bored and anxious, and that often leads to destructive behaviors and habits. But before you spend a lot of money on horse toys, try a few of these inexpensive alternatives.

Raid The Recycling Bin: Your recycling container is a rich source of potential horse toys. Plastic milk jugs and detergent bottles can be hung in your horse's stall. Filled with a few pebbles, they make an exciting (to your horse) rattling sound when head butted. Clean milk jugs can also be used as a treat delivery system. Put a few pellets of grain inside, leave the cap off and put it on the floor. As your horse rolls the jug around, pellets magically appear! Fun and food! What a deal!

The Vegetable Aisle: Horses love carrots. Play a little horse game by hiding a few chunks of carrots around the stall (but not in the bedding). On a ledge, mixed in with the hay...anywhere she might explore with her ever-curious mouth.

The Hanging Spud: Find an extra large turnip and bore a hole through it. Thread a rope through it, tie a knot in the bottom and hang it from the ceiling. Tether turnip! This is a fun and tasty toy that's easy and cheap to make.

Bobbing For Apples: Float an apple in her water bucket. Your horse will find this curious and intriguing.

Attention Sports Fans: A real leather football is a safe and durable toy for horses. The genuine article can be pretty pricey, though. Yard sales are a good source for used footballs. Keep your eyes open for big yoga balls and hula hoops, too.

Sounds Like Fun: A metal bell can entertain some horses. One caveat: over time (like more than five minutes), bells can be pretty annoying for people, so use your best judgement here.

Equine Opera: While there is no hard scientific evidence to confirm it, some horses seem to respond favorably to relaxing music. Classical? New age? Folk? Cruise around the dial to find her favorites. Hopefully, you'll have similar tastes.

You Gotta Have Friends: Horses are herd animals and need the companionship of herd mates. If you can't rush out and acquire another horse, consider a goat. Horses love goats! They have enormous personality and require very little upkeep. If a goat is even a bit much for you, a barn cat is another option. And they keep the rodent population under control, an added bonus.

Whatever boredom buster you choose, be sure to change it often. Horses aren't hard to entertain, but they do like variety. Changing sights, sounds and textures helps to desensitize them to frightening stimuli, too, so they're less afraid of normal changes in their surroundings.

The Best Electronic Educational Toys For Young Boys

Many toy manufactures now focus on the educational usefulness of the toys they produce. After all, toys have been known to nurture minds while encouraging discovery and enjoyment. Here are the top electronic educational toys for young boys that do not compromise the balance between fun and learning:

Number recognition

Introduce the joys of mathematics early to a young boy and help nurture a love for numbers. There are several great electronic educational toys that young boys will love, including oversized talking calculators that teach basic mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These are colorful toys, which children find quite attractive. Battery power means these electronic toys can be carried anywhere.

Another great addition for your child's collection is the electronic numbers mat. It consists of several mats with corresponding numbers and images. When pressed, the image reads the numbers out loud. Excellent for assisting young boys in learning to recognize and count numbers. Mats with images emit animal sounds.

Sequencing games

When there are electronic educational toys, sequencing games no longer have to be boring stuff. Engage your young boys in hours of fun, play and learning. An excellent electronic toy to look for is the one offered by LeapFrog -- children manipulate components of the toy to create patterns and even play melodies. Helps focus not just on creativity and reasoning but also in developing children's motor skills.

Building toys

Lego bricks are great but there are many electronic educational toys designed for young boys that encourage them to build and create another toy out of several components. Consider getting your child a radio and electronics set of a basic circuitry board. All components come in a box with instructions.

To build the toy itself, the child follows the instructions provided in an easy to read manual. Once he's done, he will be able to make his own radio, for example, or a simple circuits board that has a computer interface or even a simple robot that comes with a sensor. Helps encourage creativity and scientific thinking; also helps develop focus.

Electronic educational toys such as these are best for older boys. Some components are small enough to be choking hazards, so avoid giving to a young child.

Science kit

There is a wide variety of electronic educational toys that young boys will find interesting, particularly if they are fond of science. Consider kits such as those that introduce your child to magnets, electricity, electromagnets, radio, sound, motion, computers and light. Try puzzles that combine light and sound or radio-controlled toys. For older kids, try the 100-in-1 or 200-in-1 electronic project kits that will provide them with neverending fun and learning.

Educational Toys That Are For Developing the Imagination

The main point to having educational toys is to develop the imagination and curiosity. Some old-fashioned items still have the capacity to learn something good, something that will help in the future. Parents control the play so that it remains on an educational course, requires greater concentration and solving problems. These problems to solve are ones that need to encourage them to use their imagination. For example, a toy that is open-ended and teaches concepts.

By developing their imagination, understand that different objects have different properties, and learn how to combine them to create other interesting objects and learning specific. Learning thru play is a reality developing on their strengths and learning style. The skills our children need to further develop and strengthen. Having endless possibilities with the play of these toys are what encourages their imagination.

By taking a closer look at learning styles early, we can help our children develop and learn through play. There is real learning experience and an environment that is fun and conducive to learning vital skills. There are combinations of fun and learning. Sensory materials, such as finger painting, are great ways to develop. This is a hands-on motor skill that gets carried through school years.

Children need a balance of toys from each of these groups to ensure their whole development. Sensory attraction and self-expression where they've reached a level of personal satisfaction. Research shows that many disabilities and learning disorders in young children can be avoided by providing them with appropriate cognitive stimulation as early as possible.

Simple Wooden Toys

Simple wooden toys have many applications. Used for babies, they help in sensory development by stimulating sight, touch and hearing. As infants slowly look around and focus on objects, big colorful wooden blocks help them distinguish between two objects, thus developing their sensory perception of sight. As months pass, they reach out and grasp objects that catch their eye. Colorful, easy-to-grasp, smooth-edged wooden toys are ideal for this stage. As part of their sensory development infants and toddlers taste everything. Non-toxic smooth wooden toys are ideal for this purpose. Children at this stage have limited attention spans, so a variety of toys is important. Wooden toys are inexpensive and varied, so many shapes and sizes can be used.

Simple wooden toys such as wooden farm animals, wooden sea creatures, carts and trains serve a number of purposes. They relate to the simple things that a child recognizes and thus encourages imaginative play. Differing developmental stages can be seen as the same toy gets used in differently by each child.

Apart from customized simple wooden toys, a parent can even opt for making his own toys these days thanks to the large number of do-it-yourself kits available. With only a rudimentary knowledge of wood crafting, making simple wooden toys can indeed become an interesting hobby. So whatever the case, be it simple fun or as a decorative item, a hobby or a gift, simple wooden toys are a great idea. They are available everywhere in all shapes and sizes and in all price ranges. As decorative items, the price depends on a number of factors like the creator of the item, its size, the amount of intricacy involved in the work done and of course the quality of wood used.

Toys are essential for a child's balanced social and emotional development. Simple wooden toys are an investment, as they get used for several years by children. Later, when children outgrow them, the toys can be used creatively by adults as innovative decoration ideas.

Giggling, Bouncing Gizmos (Toys That Bounce, Sing, Etc)

There are a lot of reasons why you might want an animated kind of toy. Something like a tickle me Elmo, a bouncing Tigger, or a flashy mobile for the baby. Infants, of course, really enjoy toys that make sound, lights, or movement, as this is very helpful to their sensory development. Some younger children love toy guitars that can make songs at the press of a button. Or maybe, you just have a whole bunch of headache medicine going to waste!

Whatever the case may be, there are plenty of options for these kinds of toys, and it's all a matter of knowing what your kids need, and what they like...

For Babies

Again, animated toys are very helpful to a baby's sensory development, teaching infants about light, colour, sound, and learning to interacting with the world around them.

Mobiles should be an obvious one. These can be mounted to the crib or child seat, and provide music and movement that keep the child entertained and teach them the basics of observation.

An interesting toy on the market right now would be the Rainforest 123 Musical Gym, from Fisher Price. The Musical Gym provides a soft floor mat, with a mobile on top and a mirror and ball on the bottom, for when the baby is laying on his or her stomach.

Musical Toys

There are actually plenty of real, child sized musical instruments available, including drum kits, children's electric organs, and all sorts of voice recording and microphone based toys. Of course, if that's a little too complex for your kids at their current age, there are also toy instruments, like The Wiggles Musical Guitar, which will play catchy melodies and lyrics at the push of a single button.

For Slightly Older Kids...

Remote control toys are great for pretty much any kid between the ages of eight and eighty. With technology getting cheaper and cheaper these days, RC toys aren't limited to cars anymore. Today you can get an RC Battle Tank, a Walking Mini Robosaur, or a Mini Walking Robot, featuring complex movement. The Robosaur actually raises and lowers its head, while many RC battle tanks have fully operating turrets, complete with sound effects.

For Toddlers...

Children between the ages of two and five are really focusing on learning how the world around them works, how to interact with it, and improving their motor skills. For this reason, interactive toys are a great idea for toddlers.

Toys like the Playskool Busy Ball Popper are a great choice, as they provide both entertainment, and allow for plenty of interaction, dropping the balls down the chute, hitting buttons, and watching the multicoloured balls make their way up through the toy to be dropped back in again.

The important thing is to find the toy that's appropriate for your kid's particular stage of development. Obviously, what dazzles an infant may bore a toddler, what entertains a ten year old may confuse a six year old. Know where your child is at developmentally, and selecting a useful toy should be child's play.

Educational Toy Companies

To help the parents in supporting their kids to learn while growing up, innumerable toy companies have come up with various educational toys. These companies manufacture toys and supply them to the various toy stores spread all over the country. Some may even have their own retail stores. They provide their customers with a wide range of collections to choose from.

These companies conduct a close study of the needs and necessities of a toddler and design the toys accordingly. Different companies manufacture different kinds of toys and often become popular for a particular toy, which has been largely accepted and used by parents to educate their children.

The toy manufacturers help to form the backbone of the toy industry and thus they have to be very careful about designing and producing the toys they do. The researchers and the engineers of these companies also keep in mind the safety aspect of each toy. It is necessary for these companies to ensure that their toys are not capable of harming the child in any way. If there are any potential dangers associated with the toy, clear and precise information about the possibilities of dangers associated must be provided by the company to accompany the toy explaining how to play with or use the specific toy. Any unwanted incident caused due to their carelessness may result in ruining their reputation and business position in the market. Thus, toy companies are very particular about the quality of all manufactured toys.

These companies employ specialists for every department, from research to the final production of the toys. All these toys are tested before reaching the shop floor, and eventually to the kid's room. These toys may vary from simple puzzle solving games, to building blocks, toy guns, stuffed toys, and theme toys, consisting of stories and incidents to play with. Educational toy companies also keep in mind how educational a toy can be in keeping with the age, and gender of the child, including the fun part associated with the toy.

The New Bakugan Toy Craze

Move over Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, there's a new sheriff in town that is sweeping the collector card game community.  New on the scene is Bakugan Brawlers.

Adapted from a Japanese Animation which made it's debut in 2007. The game was created which is a strategic card game, called Bakugan.  Bakugan was developed by Sega Toys and Spin Master and was strategically released in conjunction with the anime series.

The Bakugan trading card game uses metal cards and magnetic spring-loaded miniature figures in the shape of marbles, called Bakugan. The objective of the game is to capture three of your opponent's gate cards or defeat all of their Bakugan.

What makes Bakugan unique from the other trading card games on the market, such as Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh, is that not only do you have to use strategy with the placement of your playing cards, but also the skill of shooting your Bakugan miniatures so that they end up landing on a card.

The Bakugan trading card game was such a hit in the 2008 Christmas season that tournament type events were held at various Toy's R Us locations around the U.S.  Another thing that sets Bakugan apart from the other trading card games is that the rules are so easy to learn that children as young as four years old can learn and start playing right away.

Many add ons were created for the Bakugan trading card game such as a battle arena, and bakugan shooting devices, but the only thing that is required to play is three bakugan marbles and 3 bakugan cards for each participant.  Bakugan Battle Brawlers battle packs are a starter set that was created for two children, which contain 6 bakugan and 6 battle cards.

Other offerings in the Bakugan Trading Card game is Bakugan Booster Packs, which come in Bakugan Starter Pack Red and Bakugan Starter Pack Blue.  The game is already turning into a collectors frenzy with rare cards and unique desirable's similar to the other trading card games.

The age old game of marbles combined with the 20th century craze of the trading card games, combined into a new Trading Card Game is unique and makes for great excitement for young and old alike.

Dwarf Hamster Toys - Make Them Yourself

Toys are a big part of any dwarf hamster's life. Not only are they fun for the hamsters, but it's always fun for anyone watching them play with the toys. There are a great number of toys available at the pet store, but you don't always have to buy them. Homemade dwarf hamster toys are an excellent way to provide your hamster with some fun and excitement. In fact, homemade toys can sometimes be better than store bought toys. Plus they're free!

Of course you still need your staple dwarf hamster toys. You will always need a dwarf hamster wheel and most likely you will be buying this one since it will be difficult (to say the least) to make one yourself. Another staple, the chew toy, is a bit different. You can use a small twig. Just make sure there are no chemicals on it. But I don't consider a twig you can find outside a homemade toy. What I mean by home made dwarf hamster toys are the toys that aren't necessary like a wheel or a chew toy, but toys that could be considered extras and provide great fun for your hamster.

What we're talking about are toys that will make your hamster's living area livelier. Yes, this includes toilet paper rolls, but there's much more you can do than that. We're talking about tunnels, rooms, mazes, swings, bridges, ladders, platforms, you name it! The great thing about all these is that you can construct them all fairly easily with cardboard. Take the maze for instance. With a few arts and crafts tools, you can easily make a fun maze for your hamster to tunnel through (just make sure the walls are tall enough so that he can't cheat by climbing over them). Another example is putting a piece of string through a toilet paper roll and hanging it from the top of the cage. You've just made a swinging tunnel.

But how do you get him to play with the maze, tunnel, or swing? The key to getting your dwarf hamster to play with the new toys are with treats. I'm sure you've all heard of a mouse maze with a piece of cheese at the end. Well, just put a few pumpkin seeds or other dwarf hamster food at the end of the maze and he will smell it and go for it. Put some on the swing and he will climb up and play on it. After he realizes how fun it is, he'll be coming back in no time.

Lego Agents Toys - Mobile Command Center

One of the most loved toy makers in the world has done it again, creating a #1 hot-seller for kids in the age range of 8-14, and reportedly adults are also having a great time with it!

This toy is far more than a simple Lego set for kids - it's a "super secret good-guy spy" game that combines much creative building with creative imagination and strategy too.

Mission of the Lego Agents Toys - Mobile Command Center: The evil Dr. Inferno has been captured by the good-guy spies, and is being held captive in the command center. The players' job is to make sure that not only does Dr. Inferno stay captive, but to prevent his evil minion spies from infiltrating the command center.

The command center is an "in disguise" very innocent looking blue and gray trailer truck but secret hatches open to reveal what's inside - super spy technology and the utmost top-secret information - as well as a high-tech prison cell for Dr. Inferno to prevent his escape.

The Lego Agents Toys Mobile Command Center includes 7 figures, one jet plane and 2 cars - there are a total of 1,154 pieces to put together, but detailed instructions (4 books with details and pictures) are included to make sure that the set can be put together methodically, step-by-step. Once it's all put together, kids can proceed to "spy mode", play the game out and have a wonderful time.

If you're looking for a great toy for an imaginative child who loves building and spy games, the Lego Agents Toys Mobile Command Center is a great choice, and most definitely gets a "thumbs up".

Cheap Toys - Fun Toys Don't Have to Be Expensive

Have you ever bought your child the latest toy but they enjoyed playing with the box more than the toy itself? Toys these days are incredibly expensive and a multi-billion dollar business, with manufacturers spending a fortune on research of how to tap into a child's mind and make them want to buy their toy.

The truth is that most parents could save a packet by buying cheaper toys or making them out of household objects, which kids will find just as fun, perhaps even more entertaining! Here are some top tips for the best cheap toys to keep your little ones occupied for hours:

A garden sprinkler: one of the cheapest and best loved toys available for the summer months. You can pick one up for as little as $10... what can be more fun than jumping through the cool water of a spraying sprinkler?
Water guns: also a hit during the summer, water guns cost from a dollar to fifty and will keep the kids and their friends of all ages having fun for hours.
Bubbles: a great toy for younger children, you can even make your own with a squeeze of washing up liquid and some water shaken up in a plastic drink's bottle. Or on a rainy day put the mixture in a bowl and let them make their own bubble machine by blowing through a straw. Simple yet great fun!
Play-Doh: one of the cheapest toys for kids and a great way to improve their creativity and get them used to making things with their hands. A Play-Doh fun bucket costs under $10 and includes 5 cans of doh, animal moulds, cutters and shaping tools. A classic and timeless fun toy.
LEGO buckets: all kids love LEGO and it's perfect for children's changing needs. One day they may want to build a house, the next they may choose to make an aeroplane - LEGO allows their imagination to run wild!
Jumbo crayons: pretty much every child loves drawing and jumbo crayons are a cheap toy that doesn't make a mess. You can take them with you wherever you're going with a pad of paper and also allow you to educate them during play.
Dressing up box: little girls and boys love dressing-up. Fill a box with old shawls, sarongs, funny hats and wigs and let them create their own characters and put on shows and plays.

One last tip: if your kids insist on the latest toy or gadget and you're prepared to fork out the cash, look for a supplier who stocks wholesale which enables them to offer toys at a discounted price. Or look for Mum's clubs online where there are excellent quality second hand toys being sold off at great prices.

Elmo Live Secrets! An Inside Toy Store Clerk Reveals All

Dying to know the secrets of Elmo Live, one of this season's hottest toys?

Let me end the suspense right here by saying that Elmo Live is a fantastic toy, and I can't say that very often about the dozens of toys that I handle every week.

I'm a seasonal toy clerk (for the sixth straight year!) who spends lots and lots of time explaining popular toys to customers. I also work the customer service desk, so I get to know all about the ones that customers return, too.

Over the years, I've become a sort of toy-information broker. I get no-holds-barred product reviews from kids and customers, and I pass those on to consumers who are about to open their wallets.

First off, Elmo Live is a super-fun, interactive toy designed for toddlers 18 months and older, although I've seen children even younger positively light up, smile, laugh, and point their fingers as soon as they see Elmo Live on the shelf. That's the power of Sesame Street branding.

Here's my list of Elmo Live features that I've personally tested myself (OK, played with). These comments also take into account customer feedback, which we get in abundance at the store. Let these real-world comments and observations guide your purchase decision.

Great Quality. One of criteria used by the toy industry to assess product success is the number of returns, which for Elmo Live have been shockingly low. I say that because new toys that push the envelope of technology and, here, interactivity, often get returned in droves. Usually, my prime play time with a toy is when I'm repackaging a return (sorry, boss). Not this season. I had to get all of my playing time from the Elmo Live demo model during coffee breaks.

Perfect Choice. Elmo is the flagship character of the Sesame Street brand. Parents and children trust and love him. Like I said, even pre-toddlers recognize him immediately. Elmo Live is flying off the shelves as much for reasons of trust and recognition as it is for his advanced animatronics. So if you need a fast gift for a toddler, Elmo Live is the perfect choice.

Total entertainment! Elmo Live talks, sings, laughs, jokes, tells stories and dances. Squeezing one of his pressure/tickle points like his nose, foot, tummy or back will elicit different reactions, all of them highly entertaining. He comes with a little, blue plastic chair. When he sits down, he crosses his legs and tells a story. He flails his arms, tilts his head way back, opens his mouth (in sync with speech), bows and twists. He is the full entertainment package.

Elmo Live is the mirror image of his TV persona. Fisher-Price has really captured the essence of Elmo's on-camera personality. He's just as silly, funny, loving, spontaneous and crazy as he is on Sesame Street. I don't often find this kind of perfect match in other toys/dolls/action figures that attempt the spin-off from TV/film to toy-store shelf. So the good news with Elmo Live is that you're getting exactly what you expect.

Educational, too! Elmo Live's expressions, speech, gestures and personality are all so spot-on lifelike that children see him as human, too. You should see just how engaged children become when playing with Elmo Live. It's as though they're interacting with a real family member, who, in this case, happens to be a fuzzy, red baby monster. I mention this for the real education and socializing features that Elmo Live offers. He's very polite, and he'll teach that to your child, nephew, niece or godchild.

Batteries included! Yes, you read that right! Elmo Live comes with 6 AA batteries. Fisher-Price has also wisely designed a power-down feature into the toy. If Elmo Live doesn't get any attention for a few minutes. He'll politely shut himself off to save on the batteries. The store where I work has a limit on Elmo Live purchases. You can't buy more than two. This is to discourage the kind of hoarding and subsequent eBay scalping that happened with Tickle Me Elmo and other in-demand toys. That said, we have to restock Elmo Live continuously throughout the day. Some days we have no stock at all. This is a very, very popular toy for the holiday season. My strong suggestion is not to wait, especially as we get into December.

Best of luck to you and be on the watch for my other toy-article reviews. Thanks!
