Toys are a vital part of your rabbit's environment. Rabbits need toys for mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. But as any animal owner knows, owning a pet doesn't come cheap. Once you've paid for your bun's hutch, bedding, bowls, grooming kit, medicines, pellets and hay there might not be much left in the budget for toys! Here are 5 toys for rabbits that are easy to get hold of and under $1 each:
1. Baby teething keys
You can pick these up at your local supermarket or drug store, just make sure they are the hard plastic kind and not soft rubber.
2. Toy spring/Slinky
Rabbits love watching these move and some will even knock it over to start it 'slinkying'. If your rabbit is likely to chew a plastic one then go for metal here but make sure it doesn't have any sharp edges.
3. Light plastic kids ball
Buy one that is light enough for your bunny to roll around and big enough that she can't get her teeth in to. A dwarf bunny may only need a tennis ball size while a Flemish Giant will definitely need something larger! With a little patience you can teach your bun to play 'Bunny Fetch', where she chases her ball then rolls it back to you for a reward.
4. Hard plastic cat balls with little bell inside.
The cat aisle is a great place to find cheap rabbit toys. Your bun will love these little balls to bat around or to push it along with her nose. The bell movement and sound will keep her entertained.
5. A piece of PVC pipe
You can pick these up very cheaply from the hardware store. Be sure to check that it's wide enough so that your bun doesn't get stuck and doesn't have any little PVC shavings around the edges.
